Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best way for me to send you photos for my site?

Generally emailing us the photos is the best way. If you have a large number of photos you could create a zip folder and then email us the zip folder. Or you could provide us with a cd if the above options do not work.

WebDesign | pictures | 2009-05-01

Can I send you photos via Kodak Gallery?

Generally, no. Many companies provide a way for you to publish your photos to a site where your friends and family can view the photos. This photo gallery type website is even used by photographers so that clients can view their photos. Unfortunately, what is actually posted to these sites is a compressed reduced small version of the actual photo. Sometimes the photos are converted to a format we cannot use. So unfortunately we really need the original jpg photographs and not the thumbnails or medium sized photos that are on the gallery.

WebDesign | pictures | 2009-05-01

I need to display a variety of colors that my product is available in. What is the best way to do that so that the colors look as true to life as possible?

We can try to match the desired colors by using our various graphic design software. These programs provide color tools to get a very specific color formula for use on your website. Unfortunately colors will vary to a certain degree from computer to computer. This has to do with the settings on the individual computer. There are also differences you will notice between older computers and newer computers as well as between PCs and laptops.

WebDesign | browsers | 2009-03-01

I need an order form on my site, can you help me to create that and display it on my site?

Yes. Mark can create a variety of forms. Please let us know what information is needed, and how it will be used and we will work with you to create it.

WebDesign | content | 2009-03-01

Can you create a password protected page on my site for my preferred clients to obtain information?

Yes. This is done via a php script, a MySql database, and cookies. As long as your hosting account has php and MySql and your visitors allow cookies, we can create a secure area of your site. For completely secure transactions, such as shopping, additional steps are required.

WebDesign | features | 2009-03-01

Can you build my site using my free comcast site?

We can post your web files to your comcast personal site. Comcast provides an ftp functionality similar to other hosting accounts. However, for a business this might not be the best option. Generally these personal sites do not get listed in any of the search engines. Also these personal sites can only serve very basic html pages. You would not be able to incorporate any additional programming or databases.

WebDesign | hosting | 2009-03-01

Can I put monthly specials on there?

Absolutely. Monthly, weekly, special season/holiday/etc. We can set it up ahead so it will automatically change.

WebDesign | features | 2008-12-01

Can you put my menu on my site?

Yes. We can attach it as a pdf that visitors can open, or we can incorporate it as a page on the site. You may want us to do both. If you have the menu file, please email it to us. If you do not have it, put us in touch with the company that created it for you and we will ask them to send it to us.

WebDesign | content | 2008-12-01

Some visitors to my site have said that the menu takes too long to download, is there a solution for that?

Certain file types are large and will take longer to download. This is more noticeable to those who have a slower internet connection. We could create a optional page where visitors with a slower connection could see your menu in a different format or broken up into several different files.

WebDesign | browsers | 2008-12-01

Is there a way to have specials on my site that will change daily, weekly, monthly or seasonally?

We can write a script that will show different items depending on what day of the week or month of the year it is. Using this method, you would need to tell us ahead of time what the different specials will be. If you want to be able to update this yourself, we could install a program that would allow you to update the specials yourself.

WebDesign | features | 2008-12-01

Can you put the menu on my site in different formats in order to make it easier for different visitors to download it?

Yes. We can attach it as a pdf that visitors can open, or we can incorporate it as a page on the site. You may want us to do both.

WebDesign | content | 2008-12-01

I am expecting more testimonials. How does that work if they come in after the website is completed?

Once we have published the site, if you then over the next two months, forward us some more testimonials Mark could add them at no charge. Going forward, we charge $50 per hour for updates. It would probably make sense for you to review the site in about six months, and send us any new pictures, new testimonials, revised prices, etc. at that time. Then, we would recommend reviewing and revising once per year.

WebDesign | updates | 2008-11-01

Do you have any advice about the use of colors and contrast in my pictures?

We recommend using colors on your site that reflect your companys marketing theme. We also recommend using colors that will show up well on a computer screen. Using contrasting colors can be a good way to make sure things are noticed in your pictures.

WebDesign | pictures | 2008-11-01

If I don't have many testimonials in the beginning, will you add them in for me after the site is completed? Will there be a charge for that?

Once we are done with your site we will charge fifty dollars per hour for any changes or updates. However, we do not want to hold up publishing your site because of one or two small items that you expect to have for us soon. So we may agree to make an exception on certain small items and to add them in at no charge within a narrow time frame after publishing your site.

WebDesign | updates | 2008-11-01

How can I encourage visitors to my site to submit testimonials that I could use in the future?

At the bottom of your testimonials page, you could say something like, We love to hear from our clients. Please feel free to write or email us, and let us know if we may use your comments on our site.

WebDesign | content | 2008-11-01

People who are looking at my site are commenting that the home page takes a long time to load, why is that?

Longer download times are often effected by components such as photographs, music, movies, or flash. We generally recommend against putting large files on your home page. Frequently a flash file is put on the home page for impact purposes. If your visitors are concerned about the download time, we can try to compress the flash file as much as possible. Generally this would be an issue with visitors that have a slower internet connection.

WebDesign | browsers | 2008-06-01

Is there a way that you can send me a video file of my home page and a picture file of my header for presentation purposes?

On the home page, we may have created a flash file for you. We can convert that to an AVI movie file and email that to you. Likewise, your header was probably saved as a jpg and we can email that to you as well.

WebDesign | flash | 2008-06-01

On a submittable form, is there a way to require that all fields be completed prior to sending the form?

Yes, that can be done with javascript. We can write a script that checks to see if all of the fields have been completed before the form is submitted. We can also create a script that checks for specific patterns using regular expressions to verify that a field is in the correct format e.g. that a zip code is 5 digits.

WebDesign | features | 2008-06-01

Will you do any search engine optimization as part of building my site, and do you charge extra for that?

Search engine optimization is a part of what we do when building any site, and unlike most other firms we do not charge extra for it. Many firms will charge for search engine optimization and will promise you that they can improve your ranking. We will not make any promises regarding your ranking, as it is based on many things that are beyond our control. However we will do everything we can to improve the ability of your site to be found.

WebDesign | SEO | 2008-06-01

If there are pictures on my site that I want to save onto a CD, how do I do that?

Burning pictures onto a cd will vary depending on what type of computer you have and what type of cd drive you have. As for the pictures, we keep all of your original pictures, as well as a second set of compressed and resized pictures that we use on your site. Just give us a call and we can email them to you.

WebDesign | pictures | 2008-04-01

I think I would like to see several different fonts in my site, to make it look interesting. Do you have any suggestions?

Our experience and our knowledge of graphic design have told us that two to three fonts per page is the maximum. Also, in choosing fonts it is important to use those that are available on most computers. Some artistic fonts are not available to everyone.

WebDesign | design | 2008-04-01

I really want these artistic looking pictures that have words on them. Can you do that?

Yes, we can. One thing to keep in mind is that in the type of effect you are talking about the words are actually graphics rather than text. Search engines cannot read graphics, they only read text. So if you want the search engines see those words, you will need to repeat them elsewhere in the site.

WebDesign | graphics | 2008-04-01

When I am sending you pictures, what format do you prefer? EPS, JPG, PDF, TIFF?

Photographs on your website should be in JPG format. It is preferable that they are the largest uncompressed version that you have. For graphics such as your logo we may request the original EPS or PSD version of the file.

WebDesign | pictures | 2008-03-01

I have a hosting account already, but I would prefer to have you handle that for me, can you do that?

We no longer offer hosting to new clients. It is more economical and more secure for you to purchase your own hosting and domain.

WebDesign | hosting | 2008-03-01

What are the main ideas I should get across on my web site

Four things : who you are what you do how do I reach you why should I do business with you

WebDesign | content | 2008-02-01

I want to do my own graphics

Great! We are not graphic artists and we want you to love your site. You can send us your graphics via email in any format, or on a disk and we will use them in your site.

WebDesign | diy | 2007-12-01

I have a lot of pictures of my work. Should I put them all on my site? What is the best way for me to organize them?

You probably should not use all of your photos on your website. We advise choosing the best photos, and those that best represent the types of work you do. Sometimes we may recommend breaking your portfolio down in to several categorized pages, based on different types of work. We can help you to organize your photos, and if you want, we will use our expertise to help you choose the best photos for your site.

WebDesign | pictures | 2007-12-01

I do not have a file of my logo. What options do I have for getting my logo onto my site?

The best way is to obtain the logo file from a vendor who has it, such as your sign or printing company. Ask them to email it to you, or even directly to us. If you are too busy, just give us that persons contact information and we will request it. Sometimes it is not possible to get the file. We have used photos of truck signs to create a graphic to use on clients web sites.

WebDesign | logos | 2007-12-01

I do not want to lose the opportunity to register the domain that I want, but I am not quite ready for my website yet. Can you register my domain for me, and then wait for me to hire you later to do the site?

We agree that you should grab the domain name you want right away if it is available now. However, it is not cost-effective for us to register it for you if we are not going to be building your site right away. We suggest having your site built right away, even if we just get some basic information in there to start. Then, at a later date, when you have more time, you can hire us to do some updating, which is always a good idea anyway. Another option would be for you to register your own domain, and get back in touch with us when you are ready.

WebDesign | hosting | 2007-12-01

What would I put on there?

Most companies put some background information about the owner of the company, information about products and or services offered, details on how to contact the business, testimonials from happy customers, and usually photos of products, projects, and or your facilities, staff and or equipment.

WebDesign | content | 2007-11-01

When setting up my own hosting account, are there specific requirements I should be aware of, for example storage size, number of databases, windows versus linux, etc

Most hosting accounts are sufficient for a typical brochure type web site. If your site requires interaction with the visitor, such as a contact form, you will need to have a hosting account with PHP. If your website will require a database, you should choose a hosting plan with a MySql database. A linux/unix server is preferable in most cases, but we also often work with windows/iis servers.

WebDesign | hosting | 2007-11-01

Will a website make me money, and can I sell my products online? -

You probably will not see an immediate or noticeable increase in business from your website. However, we are in an era where not having a website could cost you business. More people are now looking to the internet for their information and are forgoing newspapers and phone books. If you have a website you certainly have an edge over your competitor who does not. And, if most of your competitors have one, and you do not, you are definitely at a disadvantage. The companies that do a lot of ecommerce business tend to be the national Big Box stores. If you do want to sell products online,we can build a basic ecommerce page for your site, using paypal. We would charge an additional fee to build you an ecommerce page, and we would need you to work with us in getting the accounts set up.

WebDesign | benefits | 2007-07-01

Will my site be ranked high on the Search Engines?

No one can guarantee your ranking on the search engines. If someone is, then get it in writing. All a web designer can do is follow the current best practices for site design. Then it is a simple matter of submitting your site to the search engines and directories. You can research the best practices required at any of the search engine sites.

WebDesign | SEO | 2007-07-01

So how do I get ranked high on the Search Engines.

There are basic design practices that your web designer will implement. Your plancement will depend on many factors including the validity of the code, meta tags, title tag, h1 tag, relevant content, etc. Your ranking will also increase if you are linked to by other sites. Finally your page needs to be submitted to each of the search engines. Beyond that there is not much that can be done. Many firms will offer services to increase your ranking. The general concensus is that these offers are not completely above board.

WebDesign | SEO | 2007-07-01

My business is accredited with the BBB. Can you insert their logo and other information about that into my site?

Yes. We have done this for other businesses. We need you to have the BBB send you the code for their currently accepted logo, and permission to use it. Then, just forward that email to Mark and he will put it on your site.

WebDesign | logos | 2007-07-01

I am really interested in learning some of the process and technical pieces as we go along, do you mind answering my questions?

Other companies have promised me that if I pay them a certain amount, they can guarantee me a high ranking on Google. Can you do that?

No one can guarantee your ranking on the search engines. If someone is, then get it in writing. All a web designer can do is follow the current best practices for site design. Then it is a simple matter of submitting your site to the search engines and directories. You can research the best practices required at any of the search engine sites.

WebDesign | SEO | 2007-07-01

Can the speed of changing or moving pictures be changed on the site?

Yes. We will send you a draft, and just let us know if you feel they are too fast or too slow. Keep in mind, some computers may be faster or slower than others, so what you see may not be what everyone is seeing.

WebDesign | pictures | 2007-05-01

Is there a way to use a photo as a background for a web page?

Any type of graphic including a photo can be used as a background on a web page. We would suggest the photo be adjusted, muted, or lightened so that the text is legible.

WebDesign | pictures | 2007-05-01

If I am set up on your monthly hosting and maintenance account, does the fee go down once the front end expenses are paid down?

No. We have an ongoing expense to maintain your hosting account and domain name, and to renew it each year. Part of what you are paying in the beginning is the balance for the building of your site. The rest covers our expenses, with a small amount left over for our time. Also, for our hosting clients, we will provide occasional minor updates at no extra charge. Please note that any significant changes or updates, additional pages, or redesigns or rebuilds will be charged at fifty dollars per hour, even for our hosting clients.

WebDesign | hosting | 2007-05-01

Can you make a scrolling pictures feature on my site

Yes. Just provide us with the photos you would like to see in the scrolling feature, and let us know if they should appear in any particular order. Also let us know approximately how fast or slow you would like the photos to move.

WebDesign | pictures | 2007-05-01

How quickly can you get my site finished?

We can usually finish a site in a few weeks. If you already have your domain and hosting and can provide us with the ftp and password information at the same time as your deposit, we can get started right away. Then it will depend heavily on how readily available your information is to us (photos, content, logos, etc). We will create several drafts and ask you which you prefer, then, if we are able to agree on one fairly quickly, the process should go smoothly.

WebDesign | time | 2007-05-01

Can people order pizza on there?

Yes, you can have them email you, or you can purchase a POS system.

WebDesign | features | 2006-11-01

My computer has a virus.

You do not need a computer to have a site. We build it, prospects and customers can see it. You can come to our office to see how it looks and give us feedback on drafts.

WebDesign | challenge | 2006-11-01

I am going to have a POS system for my business, for online ordering. Would I still need the type of site you are talking about?

We recommend starting with a customized, informational site. Then, if you get a POS system you can link the two together.

WebDesign | challenge | 2006-11-01

Can you get me to the top of the Google? -

There is no simiple answer to this question. No one can guarantee your ranking. However we do all of the necessary things to encourage good search engine rankings. If you want more detail on this topic, we have a packet of information that addresses Search Engine Optimization issues. No. No one can guarantee you top ranking on google or any other search engine. There are techniques that can encourage better ranking on search engines. We use the techniques that are acceptable and recommended. Some techniques can improve your ranking but are not acceptable, and may actually get your site kicked off of certain search engines, or can cause user problems, so we will not use these. Also you can buy advertising space with google or other organizations which may also improve your ranking, but we do not get involved with that end of things. Top ranking on search engines may not even be important to you if you are a local business looking to do business with local customers. In that case your best bet is to market your website by listing it in your ads, on your trucks and signs, and on your business cards.

WebDesign | SEO | 2006-08-01

I am not really investing in growing my business, so why would I want a web site?

It can save you time (your own) and money (versus having employees do certain tasks) and can help keep your current customers happy while allowing them to refer people to you. Much more cost effective than Yellow Page ads, newspaper ads, etc.

WebDesign | benefits | 2006-08-01

Can you make me a logo?

Yup. I suggest keeping graphics to a minimum. This will make the site quicker to download, more accessible, and more professional looking.

WebDesign | logos | 2006-06-01

If I change my hosting, how do we redirect the name servers?

Generally, you would log into your domain registrars website. From there you would follow their particular directions to assign or delegate to the new hosting companys web server. This process can be complicated when the hosting and domain companies are the same, or the domain/hosting company does not provide this functionality on their website.

WebDesign | hosting | 2006-06-01

You are hosting my site and I am paying you monthly, but now I would prefer to host it myself, or have someone else handle that. How do we move the hosting account?

Generally when we first discuss the account we go over this extensively. We strongly recommend that you get your own domain and your own hosting. That way you are in control of your account. Moving your account from our hosting company to a different one can be problematic. We will make our best efforts to help you with this transaction. To be clear, we are not a hosting company, but simply we have a hosting account set up with a hosting company for a small group of our clients.

WebDesign | hosting | 2006-06-01

Can I do the hosting myself? -

You can certainly sign up for a hosting account yourself, and you can find some real bargains. You will have to renew the hosting account and the domain annually, and will have to remember to pay the monthly fee. We currently host several sites, but no longer offer it to new clients.

WebDesign | hosting | 2006-05-01

How long will it take? -

To build the site, as little as a week or two. Much depends on you, the client. Once the site is published and submitted, weeks to months (depending on the search engine) to get on the Search Engines. We can build a site in as little as about a week. On average it is about a 2-3 week process from beginning to end. Some of this depends on us - although pretty much as soon as you give us something, we do our piece of it right away. Sometimes we have to wait for the client to provide us with information, photos, logos, brochures, etc. In the beginning, if you do not have a domain and hosting, there is a timeframe for registering the domain and getting it hosted before we can begin to build the site. Near the end of the process there is usually some back and forth, as we want the site to look how YOU want it to look, so we will rework it until you are happy. Once we submit the completed site to the search engines it can take weeks to months for the site to show up on the search engines. Google is about 6 months. The site may show up right away, and then due to sandboxing will go away and then come back months later. However, if someone types in your site address they will find you.

WebDesign | time | 2006-05-01

How much for a basic site? -

A basic site is usually five pages with very few extras, such as photos, flash, logo creation etc. A basic five page site is about 500. We can do 250 down and then 250 when complete. You will also need us to register a domain and set up hosting.

WebDesign | cost | 2006-05-01

How much will it cost?

Approximately $100 per page. A basic 5-page site is $500. There may be additional charges for special features, such as flash, forms, and shopping. Some pages may not be charged the full price.

WebDesign | cost | 2006-05-01

How would a web site make my job easier?

You may find that you will save time on phone calls by answering many questions online. You can offer testimonials, price estimators, color choosing systems, etc. All of these allow your customers to find more information on your site so you can save time.

WebDesign | benefits | 2006-05-01

I don't even have a computer.

You do not need a computer to have a site. We build it, prospects and customers can see it. You can come to our office to see how it looks and give us feedback on drafts. Although you do not own a computer, most of your clients and prospects do. And they expect you to have a site.

WebDesign | challenge | 2006-05-01

I have pictures of my work, my truck, my staff, can you put those on there? -

We sure can. it is best if your photos are digital. You can email them to us or give us a disk to work from. If you have printed photos, the best option is for you to scan them and send them along to us. We can scan them but we will charge an additional fee for scanning photos. Also our scanner is not top of the line, and the scanned photos often are not as clear. We can also resize your photos, crop them, and use various techniques to improve the look of your photos. We can use photos within various pages of your site for aesthetics, and we can also create a wide variety of portfolio pages for your site using your photos.

WebDesign | pictures | 2006-05-01

I am too busy with my business to even think about that now.

We can make it fast and easy. We can create a simple site now, and in the future you can always hire us back to add to it when you have more time to put more thought into it. Plus, you may find that you will save time on phone calls by answering many questions online. You can offfer testimonials, price estimators, color choosing systems, etc. All of these allow your customers to find more information on your site so you can save time.

WebDesign | time | 2006-05-01

What would I put on my site?

Most sites contain some basic information, on different pages, such as Home, About Us, Contact Us, Services, Portfolio, Testimonials. We can help you to put this information together, using marketing materials you may already have, and also by asking you some basic questions about your business. There are also many a-ha ways of using your site which would depend on your type of business. In researching different businesses and talking to business owners we have developed a list of interesting things to put on your site. News flashes, menus, online pizza ordering, weekly or monthly specials or coupons, online appointment scheduling, these are just a few of the ways that a website could be used to make things easier for you and for your customers and prospects.

WebDesign | content | 2006-05-01

What's Hosting? -

Hosting is basically what keeps your website up and running. Having a hosting account is like paying the cable company. If you do not pay the cable company and you turn on your tv, you will not be able to watch anything. If you do not have your site hosted it is like it is not there.

WebDesign | hosting | 2006-05-01

Why should I hire you instead of buying a verizon site?

we have heard from others that they have been less than happy after purchasing a Verizon site. A verizon site is basically a template, which can cost a lot, and yet most of the work is left to you, the businessowner, to customize the site. There are still many time-consuming steps involved to complete the site and often the end result does not meet expectations. Among other problems, search engine optimization is "often a challenge. Keep in mind, many website ""designers"" are actually just using a template. We do not!"

WebDesign | choice | 2006-05-01

How much do you charge for Web Design?

The rate is fifty dollars per hour (as of 10-07-05). We create an estimate based on how long we believe the site will take to create. If you have done a lot of pre work then the estimate will be lower. If you want us to do all of the work the estimate will be higher. We do not suggest including a lot unnecessary graphics and scripting. Our estimate will be for a site that will make you look good, not us.

WebDesign | cost | 2006-05-01

What is an address bar?

It is that white area near the top of your web browser. It shows the URL of a web site. It usually starts with http://www

WebDesign | internet | 2006-05-01

How much will my domain cost?

Registering a domain costs $35 per year. There can be additional costs if you park a domain or there can be a reduction in cost if you buy your domain from the same company that hosts your web site.

WebDesign | hosting | 2006-05-01

Who hosts my site?

A hosting company simply keeps your web pages on a file on one of their computers. They generally have very high speed connections to the internet with a T1 or T3 line. They make money buy putting many web sites on each computer that they have. These computers have software for serving your site to the public and for resolving your domain to a particular IP.

WebDesign | hosting | 2006-05-01

What is IP

An IP is an Internet Protocol address. It is a unique number assigned to every computer connected to the internet. Even your personal computer has an IP assigned by your ISP.

What is DSL

Digital Subscription Line.

WebDesign | internet | 2006-05-01

So what does hosting cost?

It varies greatly. You can have your site hosted for free. In that case you many have banner ads running across your web site. Other situations allow you to have a free site, but you really just have a subdomain such as www.yourlittlcompany.SOMEONESBIGCOMPANY.com. You can find hosting for $10 to $30. Of course you get what you pay for. If you just have a basic HTML site with a few pictures then an inexpensive hosting plan should be fine. If you have high traffic or plan to do ecommerce, then you might pay over $100 per month. If you purchase hosting from your web designer, then they are reselling the hosting service. The cost will be higher but it will reduce the amount of work that you need to do.

WebDesign | hosting | 2006-05-01

What are benefits of having a web site -

A website can save you time and money. You can present a lot of key information about your business, and are able to have it updated regularly. This way you can direct prospects and clients to your site to get their questions answered, instead of spending your valuable time (or that of your employees) answering the same questions over and over again. Also, you can cut down on your print advertising by taking out smaller ads that refer people to your site, where you can present a lot more information in a more attractive format.

What is an ISP

This is getting tiring. Your ISP is your Internet Service Provider. They are the company that provides you access to the internet. It could be your cable company if you have broad band, your phone company if you have DSL, or perhaps AOL or MSN if you have a dial up connection.

I don't know anything about computers.

You don't even need to own a computer to have a site. We build it, prospects and customers can see it. You can come to our office to see how it looks and give us feedback on drafts. Although you don't know much about computers, most of your clients and prospects do. And they expect you to have a site. For us to build you a site, you don't have to know anything about computers. But, if there's anything you'd like to understand better, feel free to ask us any questions as we go along - we're more than happy to share what we know!

WebDesign | knowledge | 2006-05-01

Can you build an estimate form?

Yes. Mark is able to create many types of forms. We would need you to provide us with the raw data, as well as an idea of how you come to your final figure.

WebDesign | features | 2006-04-01

Can you do flash?

Yup. They are very fun to create but time consuming i.e. more money. I think they should be avoided in general. Businesses that use them a lot are usually trendy, hip businesses.

WebDesign | flash | 2006-04-01

Can you make one of those pictures that moves around?

Yes we can create animated gifs. We can also create Javascript effects or Flash files. Again I would keep these bells and whistles to a minimum. They are sometimes cool, but often unnecessary.

WebDesign | graphics | 2006-04-01

I would like to have a lot of pictures on my site. What are your suggestions in that area?

It is important to keep in mind the size, shape and aspect ratio of your pictures.

WebDesign | pictures | 2006-04-01

What is the process for putting the site together?

First, we collect your deposit and obtain your domain name and ftp and passwords. Then, our process is this: Words, pictures, graphics, design. First we write the content (or you provide it to us), then we will ask you for any photos that you want included, then any graphics, such as logos. Finally, we will take those elements and design the site around them.

WebDesign | process | 2006-04-01

What can I do to improve the success of my website?

You should include your website address on all of your other marketing materials. This includes your vehicles, your signs, any print ads such as yellow pages and newspapers, your stationery, including any forms you use, your business cards. Be sure to refer clients and prospects to your site as a way for them to easily obtain additional information about you.

WebDesign | marketing | 2006-04-01

Will you list my site on directories, or advise me on how to do that or what directories to use?

There are many directories on which you can list your site. Some are free and some cost money. The only one we definitely recommend is Google Maps. You may already have a google maps listing or account. If so, you should update it to include your website address. If you need help with this, ask us and we will walk you through it. Other than that, many directories are industry specific. You should research these and decide which are most beneficial to you.

What is a domain?

The domain is the name of your web site. You should decide on what name you would like. Then you can plug it into the address bar of your web browser. Many names have been taken. There is also a lot of "cyber squatting" where people buy up domain names and hope to sell them for a profit. Once you find a domain that is available, you would purchase it from a Domain Name Registrar. Generally, you can also purchase it from your hosting company. They in fact use a Registration Authority or Registration Servicing Company.

webdesign | domain | 2006-02-01

What would I put on my site? -

What's a domain? -

A domain is your web site address, or internet name for your company. It usually starts with www. and ends with .com Just like you have to register a company name with the town or state, you have to register your domain name. If someone else already has it, you can not have it. If we are going to register a new domain for you, we will ask you for your top three choices, in case the first one is gone. We recommend always using .com rather than .net or .biz, or you would use .org if you are some type of non-profit group. Most prospects and clients are going to look for a .com rather than a .net or .biz There are specific reasons for using the different suffixes which we will not get into here.

What are people looking for when they look up my business on the internet?

Unless you are a national company or a comopany that plans to do a lot of e-commerce, your customers and prospects are most likely looking for information. Information about you, your credentials, your reputation (testimonials), y our services, and how to get in touch with you.

WebDesign | content | 2005-09-01

Why doesn't my site look the same on my computer as it does on yours?

What browser are you using? If not internet explorer, then when we adjust the site for viewing on firefox, etc., it will look better, but possibly still different. If you are on IE, are you still on version 6 or have you upgraded to the latest version? When Version 7 came out all of the web rules changed. Other factors may include your screen size, resolution, whether your favorites are open and what fonts you have available to you.

WebDesign | browsers | 2005-09-01

Can you make a textured background?

If you insist. Most tiled backgrounds are pretty ugly. The most popular and profitable web sites all have one thing in common. They have a plain white background. They use colors to accent certain areas. But they keep their background white so that the content is easy to read. So I advise having a white or very pale background, but the decision is yours.

I think I want a Flash page for my home page. Can you do that for me?

We can create a flash home page for you. There are positives and negatives to having one. The main challenge is that the page may load very slowly for some of your customers or prospects, which could drive them away from your site. However, we have created sites with Flash home pages, and can show you a sample.

WebDesign | flash | 2005-09-01

Can you make my site look like this other site that I really like?

We are able to create any type of site. If you have seen a site or sites that you like you can give us those site addresses and we will look at them. We will not copy anyones site. However we can help you achieve a similar look with your site. Our goal is to build you a site that you will love and that you will feel reflects the image you want to project. Keep in mind that many sites you see out there are very attractive, but also very expensive. You may think you want a basic five page 500 dollar site, and then the site you see that you like is a 20 page 2500 site. We can build it, but the question is does your budget allow for that. One option is to build a five page site with a similar look and then perhaps upgrade in a year or two when your budget allows.

WebDesign | design | 2005-09-01

Can you help me with setting up my emails?

Yes. Mark can help you to set up emails that are connected to your domain name.

WebDesign | Email | 2005-09-01

How are later changes handled -

We recommend reviewing your site at least every six months. You may find that after we are done building your site, you have made changes, or acquired new information that you want to include on your site. We are available to do updates to your site, and we charge fifty dollars per hour. Mark is pretty quick and can do most changes in about an hour. If the requested changes will take longer, we will let you know, and estimate a price for you first.

How can I build a customer base?

Start by detailing who your target client is. Next you can list your personal contacts including friends and family. You could start by sellling to your personal contacts. You want to keep building your list of prospects by asking for referrals from every satisfied customer. What regulations affect my business?

Unfortunately, there are many regulations that affect small businesses. Your attorney should be able to advise you on what you need to do. You can also contact your state, county, and city governments to ask them what steps you need to take. The internet is also a valuable tool for researching regulatory issues.

Consulting | legal | 2004-01-01

When should I consult an attorney?

An attorney should be contacted as soon as you have decided to launch your business. They can advise you on what entity you should use. They can review your insurance program. They can also review any contracts involved with the business. I would advise being prepared and organized before contacting your attorney. Their time is very valuable, and you should go in with a specific list of questions and concerns for them.

How do I know if I am paying too much for my insurance?

Seek advice from your insurance agent on the appropriate insurance coverages. You do not want to risk a lot to save a little. Your insurance program should emphasize liability coverages to protect yourself and your business from being sued. If you need to reduce costs, look towards increasing your deductibles and obtaining any discounts available. Insurance can seem to be an expensive item, especially if nothing goes wrong. However, when things do go wrong, it will seem like a great investment, and can prevent you and your business from going bankrupt. You should also reviw your life insurance, disability insurance, and health insurance to see that there is adequate protection in case you are injured or disabled.

I can not seem to get organized. What should I be doing differently?

Unfortunately, some people tend to be very organized, and other people tend to be disorganized. In order to run your business effectively, you need to have a place for everything and everything in its place. This is even more difficult as a small businessowner. Since you are now the sales department, the maintenance department, the inventory department, the accounts receivable department, the accounts payable department, the marketing department, and the complaint department. If this is a challenging area for you, I would recommend seeking outside advice on how to better organize your work area. I would also recommend utilizing your computer. Much can be accomplished with programs like Outlook and Excel, so that you can keep track of your expenses and to-do items without relying on piles of papers and gobs of sticky notes.

Should I take out a business loan? Should I refinance my mortgage or get an equity line to start my business?

Once you have determined your start up costs, you have two options. One is to pull out a sufficient amount from your personal savings to capitalize the business. This would be the best option as long as your remaining savings still gives you a sufficient rainy day fund. Your other option is to borrow the money needed to capitalize the business. Unfortunately, business loans for start ups are hard to come by. If you manage to find a lender that will loan you he money it will probably be at a high interest rate, or, they will look for significant collateral. One option is a home equity loan. This has certain advantages in that it should be tax deductible and the rates are usually attractive. Some busienss owners will run up credit cards or take out other personal loans, which can be problematic. When evaluating any financing options, you want to look at the interest rate that is being charged as well as the tax deductibility of the interest. For example, credit card interest is not deductible, while an equity loan generally is.

I am not an accountant. Why does the government make all this stuff so complicated for small business owners?

The government tries to protect consumers by regulating businesses. Unfortunately, the effect on small businesses can be overwhelming. Large companies can afford to employ their own bureaucrats to deal with the bureaucracy. The government is trying to encourange small business growth, but the regulatory streamlining has been very slow in coming.

There are several options including: Sole Proprietorship , Partnership , Limited Liability Company , S Corporation , C Corporation . Your choice will depend on the size of your business, the level of liability protection sought, and the tax consequences. Consult your attorney on the best option.
